02The dhyāna+
“I bow to the Unmatta (fierce) Bhairavī, who, with great fangs, and a massive body, lifts the Earth (Vasundharā) placed in the great ocean (oceanic void of space). I bow to Vārāhī, who is holding a mace, a sword, a plough, a shining bell, a pestle, and granting boons, with a complexion like that of a rain cloud.”
Source: Nityōtsava Tantra.
03Reading the painting+
- Complexion: like a rain cloud
- In her hands: a mace, a sword, a plough, a bell and a pestle, with the varada mudrā
- Act: lifting the Earth from the great ocean on her tusks
04Laghu Vārāhī in the Purāṇas+
Dēvī Laghu Vārāhī, also known as Unmatta Bhairavī for being the consort of Unmatta Bhairava, is the Mātṛkā Vārāhī we are familiar with. She appears as the female energy of Varāha Avatāra of Viṣṇu and also from the back of Kauśikī. She fights the clan of Śumbha along with the other Mātṛs and also appears to drink the blood of Andhakāsura.
With the name Unmatta Bhairavī, she fought with Malada, a warrior of Bhaṇḍāsura during his war with Lalitā. She stays in the northwestern regions of the Cintāmaṇi Gṛha in Maṇidvīpa. She, along with many other goddesses, stays with Mahāvārāhī Daṇḍanāthā in the golden palm forest, getting intoxicated on palmyra liquor. She is an aṅgavidyā of Daṇḍanāthā.
While helping Durgā kill Mahiṣāsura, she killed demon Bāṣkala. She is also one of the goddesses of the Pañcadaśākṣarī Mahātripurasundarī Mantra mentioned in the Bahvṛcōpaniṣad.
She is also a Śaktipīṭha goddess in Kāśī (apart from Viśālākṣī/Maṇikarṇikā) in the Kratuvarāha Kṣētra. She is usually the fifth Mātṛkā among the Sapta, Aṣṭa, and Nava Mātṛ Kramas which is why she is known as Pañcamī.
