01Who is Svapna Vārāhī?

Svapna Vārāhī, also called Svapnēśī, is the goddess of dreams — through dreams she shows her devotees what is auspicious and inauspicious, and takes away bad dreams.

This canvas art print by Swaroop is part of the Forms of Vārāhī series.

02The dhyāna

“I meditate upon the illustrious Bhairavī (Svapna Vārāhī), the goddess of dreams, who is mounted on a horse and beautifully adorned with precious jewels and gold. Her complexion is like mountain-like dark clouds and dark mountains of collyrium, she has enchanting and lofty breasts, and her three eyes shine brightly. Her face resembles a boar's, adorned with the crescent moon, and her sharp teeth shine splendidly holding the Earth with the tips of her fangs. She holds in her lotus-like hands a sword, shield, noose, and goad, and is auspicious. Engaged in the destruction of the wicked, she grants boons to her devotees. In dreams, the auspicious and inauspicious are foretold, indicating the deeds of devotees. I bow to Vārāhī, who takes away bad dreams and is the goddess of dreams. She instructs in dreams about auspicious and inauspicious matters regarding the deeds of devotees.”

03Reading the painting
  • Vāhana: a horse
  • Complexion: dark as rain clouds
  • Eyes: three
  • In her hands: a sword, a shield, a noose and a goad
04In the Lalitōpākhyāna

Dēvī Svapna Vārāhī, also known as Svapnēśī and Bhairavī, is an upāṅgavidyā of Mahāvārāhī. As Svapnēśī, she fought Maṅgala, a warrior of Bhaṇḍāsura during his war with Lalitā. Like Unmatta Bhairavī, Svapna Vārāhī along with many other goddesses, stays with Mahāvārāhī Daṇḍanāthā in the golden palm forest, getting intoxicated on palmyra liquor.
